The lovesick amphibian is the only known Sehuencas water frog in the world, and he has been calling for a mate ever since researchers collected him from the wild a decade ago. Now they have launched him into the world of online dating in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the rejuvenation of his species. When it was first described in , the Sehuencas water frog was common in Bolivia. However, its numbers have declined rapidly in recent years due to a combination of factors including climate change, habitat loss and pollution. Populations were further depleted by trout introduced from North America, which are known to feed on tadpoles, and the spread of the deadly amphibian disease chytridiomycosis. The disease, caused by a highly infectious fungus, has been blamed for a massive global decline in amphibian populations, and is known to have resulted in hundreds of extinctions already. To add to these problems, the Bolivian government is now planning to build a dam in the area that gave these frogs their name — Sehuencas. That is why we have to start this campaign now.

But something surprising happened this time around: She actually met someone she genuinely likes.
After texting for a few days, she organized a virtual date via FaceTime with the match she liked, chatting over drinks for about two hours.

February 12, Anybody looking for a Valentine’s Day date in cyberspace might want to consider this prediction from an evolutionary biologist: Online dating could affect how humans evolve in the future. Solomon said the proliferation of web- and app-based dating options over the past 20 years may be affecting men and women differently.
But that evolved cue doesn’t help much when a woman is looking for a partner online. As a result, Solomon said, online dating offers more of an evolutionary advantage to men. Explore further.

The prospect of dating a scientist for most people does not conjure up highly thrilling date evenings. By jpo March 03, Probably everyone who reads the ChEMBL-og will have world-changing ideas – but it’s really difficult to find someone to screen a few compounds for you – of course there are CROs who will want to meet, then prepare a quote for you, set up a CDA, receive payment, etc. There are no grant mechanisms for this sort of thing either – imagine – “I’d like funds to test four compounds as potential inhibitors of snoraze” – no chance at least with the panels I’ve sat on too small, too speculative The bigger problem though is finding someone with the assay or the compounds.
But, there’s a lot of people with compounds to test, and a lot of biologists with assays that are easy to run in their labs, and they have expertise in, but who can’t assemble sets of interesting compounds to profile. Why not just use the paradigm of a dating site to matchmake mutually compatible biologists and chemists – if there is a spark, it could develop into a long lasting collaborative relationship!
Anyway, there’s a toy FaceBook group that I’ve set up – just to get the idea across. I’ve pitched this as a national thing so for me that means to the UK, for you somewhere different maybe – not least that it’s a lot easier to ship compounds around within a country than between – and also there’s a clear match to downstream funding opportunities. I chose FaceBook, since most of the open LinkedIn groups I’m involved in are train-wrecks of spam and flame-wars.
I think this idea is worth trying, or at least getting some discussion started over – huge thanks to Tom Heightman for our recent discussion on things that needed to be done in Chemical Biology in the UK. A hookup culture is one that accepts and encourages casual sex encounters, including one-night stands and other related activity, without necessarily including emotional intimacy , bonding or a committed relationship. Most research on hookups has been focused on U. The rise of hookups, a form of casual sex , has been described by evolutionary biologist Justin Garcia and others as a “cultural revolution” that had its beginnings in the s.
The sexual revolution of the s brought a loosening of sexual morals which allowed for sex to become uncoupled from relationships and non-marital sex to become more socially acceptable. According to a review by Garcia, this is “an unprecedented time in the history of human sexuality. As a result, Garcia and other scholars argue that young adults are able to reproduce physiologically but are not psychologically or socially ready to ‘settle down’ and begin a family.
These developmental shifts, Garcia’s systematic review of the literature suggests, is one of the factors driving the increase in hookups, a “popular cultural change that has infiltrated the lives of emerging adults throughout the Western world. Garcia and others have noted that the “past decade has witnessed an explosion in interest in the topic of hookups, both scientifically and in the popular media.
Research on hookups is not seated within a singular disciplinary sphere; it sits at the crossroads of theoretical and empirical ideas drawn from a diverse range of fields, including psychology , anthropology , sociology , biology , medicine , and public health. It is hard to make sense of the hookup culture with understanding why it exists in society and why individuals participate in the culture. According to Shannon T.

Fossilized roots dating back to million years ago, in Cairo, New York. The researchers say the new site is evidence that forests developed 2 to 3 million years earlier than previously thought. The findings were published recently in the journal Current Biology. The site, located in the town of Cairo, New York, has three unique root systems — evidence that ancient forests were comprised of several different tree species. The first species scientists identified was a palm tree-like plant called Eospermatopteris , which has short roots that lived for a year or two before dying and growing new ones, according to a press release.
They also found fossils of a tree called Archaeopteris , which shares several traits with modern conifers. Trees in Archaeopteris genus later became the first to evolve flat, green leaves, New Scientist reported. Although still dramatically different than modern trees, Archaeopteris nevertheless seems to point the way toward the future of forests.
